Emotional barriers to school attendance (EBSA) has far-reaching consequences for children and their families. Research shows that EBSA can have a negative impact on a childโs academic attainment, whilst also limiting their social opportunities and employment outcomes.
One Education has published free resources to support schools with early identification and effective intervention, giving children the tools they need to overcome challenges and access their right to a full-time education.
Emotional Barriers to School Attendance Guidance
Our new and updated guidance can be downloaded here.ย
This document was created by Manchester City Council, One Educationโs Educational Psychology Service, Manchester Parent Carer Forum, Parents and Health as well as schools, colleges and provisions across Manchester.
The new guidance is underpinned by recent research and practice-based evidence. It is intended to support a preventative, early intervention and whole school approach.ย
Planning for Change Toolkit
Our new Planning for Change Toolkit is also available to download here.ย
This has been designed to support the Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) cycle to identify and implement support for pupils with EBSA.
We encourage schools to be proactive and respond swiftly to indicators of EBSA. As long as problems remain unaddressed, the behaviour will become entrenched and result in poorer outcomes.
Inclusion Toolkit
A wealth of other resources can be found within the Inclusion Toolkit, which is available to download for free on our website.
The Inclusion Toolkit is a one-stop resource hub, designed to empower professionals working with children and young people to create an environment in which every learner is able to thrive and reach their full potential.
This includes a series of free webinars, introduction guides, leaflets, and a self-audit tool.
