Manchester City Council and One Education are passionate about building foundations for success in the Early Years and are coming together to facilitate a conference which will explore how we can do this. The aim for the day is to collaborate, share and discover what works best for our young children in their early years.

Building Relationships in EYFS: Understanding and supporting Emotional Regulation

With Judith Liggett and Tricia Euston

Personal, social and emotional development is one of the three prime areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. It is recognised that children’s social and emotional development underpins the skills needed for learning. This session will explore the importance of learning through supportive, attuned relationships to help children understand their feelings and form social bonds. With a focus on co-regulation, we explore the psychology of children’s emotional development, how to understand triggers for emotional dysregulation and evidence-based strategies for supporting emotional development.  We believe that this knowledge and strategies can help children build “provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and in later life.” (EYFS)

Enabling environments in EYFS: integrating Communication & Language opportunities

With Helen Marriott

Communication and Language, one of three prime areas in EYFS, is essential in EYFS, through education and beyond. This interactive session is designed to equip practitioners with the tools and strategies necessary to foster language development in young learners along with identifying those children who may need additional support or intervention. During the workshop, participants will explore how to create a language-rich environment, encourage expressive and receptive language skills, and support children with varying levels of language proficiency. The workshop will provide practical examples of communication and language opportunities that can be seamlessly integrated into daily routines to enhance communication skills. By the end of the session, attendees will have ideas to implement in their environments, ensuring that every child can develop strong language foundations in their early years.

Physical Development

Ravensbury Primary School and MCC

Physical Development, one of three prime areas in EYFS, is vital for the all-round development of babies and children; it enables them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives.  This interactive session is designed to equip practitioners with the tools and strategies necessary to promote children’s physical skills. During the workshop, participants will explore aspects of Manchester’s Physical Development Champion Training. This will focus on enriching your physical development curriculum, specifically the environment and practice, using the highly effective pyramid of learning approach. Practical tools have been developed using this approach and will be shared by Ravensbury Primary School, one of Manchester’s schools based Physical Development Champions. By the end of the session, attendees will have new ideas to implement, ensuring that every child can grow their physical development skills.

Literacy in EYFS - Fostering firm foundations for life

Catherine Delaney

Effective teaching of early Literacy is instrumental in providing all children with the best possible opportunities for future success. This session will explore how to best support children to develop their early Literacy skills through stories, role play, effective environments and communication. Participants will gain practical ideas to support young children in mastering the skills needed before they can become competent and fluent readers, whilst fostering a love of books within all pupils. We will also explore writing in EYFS; from the physical development needed for mark-making to writing for purpose, providing the knowledge and skills for successful early writing by creating a language and literature-rich setting.

Constructing our own inspirational curriculum in EYFS.

With Laura Lodge

Let’s delve into the nuances of curriculum development, exploring strategies that excite and inspire learning whilst also taking account of statutory guidance. In this workshop, emphasis is placed on ensuring that your curriculum design remains flexible and responsive to children’s preferences, interests and developmental stages whilst being progressive, building upon prior knowledge, learning and remembering more. By the end of the workshop, educators will be equipped with practical insight to support them in constructing an inclusive, curriculum which optimises learning experiences.

The Power of Play in EYFS

With Jo Gray and Amy Woodfield

By exploring the profound impact play has on young children’s learning and development we will remind ourselves of what really matters. Practitioners will consider strategies to integrate playful learning experiences into their curriculum, fostering an environment where children eagerly explore, experiment, and collaborate. We will also explore how play can be used to help children build positive attachments, develop a strong sense of self, help with self regulation and aid in making sense of their inner and outer world. By the end of the workshop, practitioners will have a wealth of research around why we support our children to learn through play and reignite their passion for the magic, awe and inspiration that play can create. We know play is a cornerstone of effective early childhood education and we recognise its pivotal role in cultivating lifelong learners – let’s explore why together!

Putting the child first: Effective assessment in EYFS

With Helen Marriott

Effective assessment is a cornerstone of powerful learning and ensuring we use it to identify gaps and support individual learners is essential in excellent teaching. This workshop will explore best ways to move children’s learning on considering child development and where children are in their learning journey. We will explore how the changes to the EYFS Framework in 2021 have meant a reduction in paperwork and a need to really know what our children are confident in doing independently. We will focus on how we can observe, have child development conversations, and adapt our practice and provision in accordance to what is seen to ensure that all children’s unique needs are continued to be met throughout their time in EYFS.

This workshop is aimed at schools but PVI settings are welcome to attend.

Responding to increased need

With MCC

Settings and schools are experiencing an increase in the level of need of children they are educating, especially in relation to speech, language and communication needs. This workshop will cover resources available to support and train Early Years professionals, share learning from schools involved in the EY Kickstarter and provide examples of inclusive practice from across Manchester.
