You may have already heard that the framework is changing from September 2021 and want to know what the changes are and how they affect you.

What you need to do before September 2021 will depend on your role and the type of setting you work in. For example, if you’re a practitioner in a nursery, your manager should already be aware of the changes for September 2021 and be preparing for them already.

Why the changes are happening

The changes to the EYFS statutory framework are being made to:

  • improve outcomes at age 5, particularly in early language and literacy
  • reduce workload such as unnecessary paperwork, so you can spend more time with the children in your care

Timeline of changes

Academic year 2020 to 2021 Some schools, known as early adopter schools, are already using a new early adopter framework as part of the EYFS reforms early adopter year from September 2020 to August 2021.

All other schools and early years providers should continue to follow the early years foundation stage (EYFS) framework until the end of August 2021.

The new revised framework in SIMS compromises of a set of marksheets, tracking grids and analysis reports.

INTEGRATED MARKSHEETS

Marksheet Templates:

  • EYFTR Data Entry Years N1, N2, R, 1
  • EYFTR Calculate Progress for years N1, N2, R and 1 for terms Autumn, Spring, Summer
  • EYFTR GLD On Track for Year N2 Summer, Year R Autumn, Spring and Summer

On clicking calculate they will automatically show pupils progress and attainment made and also if they have made Good Level Development in all 17 areas for each term.

The key features of ESS’s design are:

  • All 17 areas are included on the same marksheet.
  • The marksheet uses traffic-light colours to highlight the pupils who are at on, above, below.
  • It’s shorter, about two-thirds of the length of the previous version, to allow for more freedom to develop the right broad curriculum for the children you work with.
  • The age bands have been simplified to avoid tracking activities that do not support child development. There are now 3 instead of 6: birth to 3, 3 and 4-year-olds, children in reception
  • There’s more room for professional judgement. You can make more judgements based on your knowledge and experience, instead of using the early learning goals or age bands in the framework to track children’s progress.

TRACKING GRIDS

Tracking Grids are popular in primary schools because they can display the current level of every child in the school on a single sheet of A4 paper. They are a very useful way of viewing a subject, year or even Key Stage. Importantly, the pupils can be further filtered by a variety of ‘barriers to attainment’.

  • EYFTR Termly Attainment for years N1, N2, R and 1
  • EYFTR Termly Progress for years N1, N2, R and 1

EYFS Report – Good Level Development Statutory Results Analysis

The reports will enable detailed analysis for Early Years and key pupil groups on a termly basis. The reports are run from SIMS into Excel marksheets in the following format.

Report of pupils achieving at expected level in prime areas of learning and the specific areas of literacy and mathematics.
